This is not a traditional Qigong class, nor a single-modality art therapy training. E.Qi is a pioneering integration practice of Eastern and Western wisdom:
· Eastern Wisdom as the Foundation: Centered on Qigong's "Five Regulations" (Body, Breath, Mind, Qi, Shen) to establish deep mind-body connection and energy awareness.
· Western Arts as the Application: Incorporating expressive arts (painting, journaling, movement mapping), equine-assisted therapy concepts, and modern neuroscience (polyvagal theory) to make the healing process visual and creative.
· Integrative Healing as the Outcome: Developing a culturally profound and practical integrative healing methodology applicable in clinical, educational, and group settings.
Upon completion, you will not only learn a set of techniques but also master a new healing language capable of responding to diverse cultural needs.
This case reflects the early work that eventually led to my collaboration with Sifu Kurtis Tilley.
This 13-year-old adolescent had a history of early relational trauma and significant challenges with emotional regulation. She was bright, athletic, and highly kinesthetic, yet struggled with impulsivity and parasuicidal behaviors. While structured trauma therapy provided an important foundation, it was through bilateral movement and artmaking that she accessed a deeper sense of internal regulation.
We began with simple bilateral “air drawings,” allowing her to explore movement without the pressure of creating something tangible. Over time, these gestures transitioned into chalk drawing on large vertical and horizontal surfaces. She moved freely between standing and seated positions, discovering how gravity, space, rhythm, and breath influenced her body.
Gradually, she gravitated toward continuous and overlapping movements—spirals, infinity shapes, and eventually bilateral painting using her soccer goalie gloves. The process became deeply self-directed.
She described the experience as a way to “get emotions out,” and eventually began using bilateral movement independently as a coping and grounding strategy.
What became most significant was not the content of the images themselves, but how her body organized through the process. Her breathing slowed, posture softened, and her capacity to remain present increased.
Bilateral artmaking became her own regulatory language. This experience reinforced my belief that expressive arts therapy is most powerful when it is experienced rather than explained.
Bilateral movement and artmaking supported her not because they addressed symptoms directly, but because they allowed her to access rhythm, agency, and embodied awareness.
For me, this work exemplifies how expressive arts therapy bridges neuroscience, somatics, and creativity without losing its soul. Regulation emerges through relationship—between left and right, inside and outside, therapist and client.
One adult client living with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) participated in E.Qi work both individually and within a group format over the course of a year.
Through consistent engagement with breath, grounded movement, and equine-centered presence, she developed increasing capacity for physical and emotional regulation.
This foundation later allowed her to engage more deeply in parts-informed therapeutic work, with increased access to psychological regulation and executive functioning.
She described becoming better able to access her prefrontal cortex when making important life decisions, rather than responding primarily from survival-based patterns.
One experience she shared illustrates how the practice had become integrated into her daily life.
While camping, she encountered a large male moose on a trail. Rather than reacting in panic, she described consciously sinking the Qi, slowing her breath, and regulating her nervous system while calmly stepping away and allowing the animal space.
For her, this moment represented a profound shift—from survival-driven reactivity to regulated presence and embodied awareness.
A long-term client living with traumatic brain injury and complex PTSD found regulation through mounted E.Qi practices.
Rather than following structured or prescribed sequences, she responded most strongly to organic, embodied movement that felt natural within her body.
Working in relationship with the horse allowed her to experience rhythm, balance, and co-regulation in a way that felt intuitive rather than effortful.
Over time, she began translating these sensations into large-scale bilateral drawing, allowing movement experienced through riding to extend into creative expression.
This process helped reinforce her sense of integration between body awareness, creativity, and emotional regulation.
