We stand at a critical crossroads in the development of arts in therapy. Globalized practice has brought unprecedented richness, yet it also presents core challenges such as disparate professional standards, cultural adaptation dilemmas, and gaps in evidence-based research. This presentation aims to transcend geographical and theoretical boundaries, charting a future roadmap for the discipline centered on dialogue and collaboration.
The talk will begin with a global scan, analyzing three major trends in the deep integration of arts in therapy with neuroscience and digital technology, as well as its irreplaceable, unique value in addressing social fragmentation and mental health crises. However, truly sustainable development must be built upon a solid, common foundation. Therefore, we will delve into how, within diverse cultural contexts, those indispensable universal ethical principles—such as cultural humility, social justice, and relational boundaries—can infuse soul and direction into the most cutting-edge clinical practices and research.
Building on this, the presentation will propose a key proposition: our future lies not in pursuing rigid, uniform standards, but in constructing a flexible shared framework. To this end, on behalf of the International Arts Education & Therapy Development Academic Association, I formally propose the launch of the "Global Alliance for Practice and Ethics in Arts in Therapy." This network aims to systematically collect and share localized, practical wisdom across cultures, establish collaborative research platforms, and promote the development of a professional reference system that respects diversity while focusing on core competencies and ethical guidelines.
Let us join hands to transform the collective insights from this forum into a solid bridge that connects the world and guides our discipline toward greater maturity and inclusivity.

Rapid development in contemporary China has amassed substantial material wealth, yet the fast-paced competition inherent in urbanization has given rise to widespread mental anxiety and spiritual exhaustion. Amid material abundance, the gap in spiritual nourishment has become increasingly apparent. Against this backdrop, individual consciousness is markedly awakening, with public needs shifting from the pursuit of external material gains to inner self-care and psychological healing, creating an urgent demand for healing methods that embody both cultural warmth and scientific value.
This presentation is grounded in this reality, delving deeply into the healing elements inherent in millennia of Chinese cultural heritage. It explores how cultural inheritance can serve as a foundation to break down barriers between tradition and modernity through interdisciplinary co-creation, and investigates innovative pathways for art therapy that integrate Eastern essence with contemporary value, thereby constructing emerging paradigms for art therapy in modern China.

In her presentation, Saša Hudnik will share her perspective as President of the Slovene Association of Arts Therapists on standard-setting, international collaboration, and ethical development. She will discuss key findings from her MA thesis titled "Multimodality of Arts Therapy and the Professionalisation of Arts Therapy in Selected Countries." This research examines the professionalisation of arts therapy in Slovenia and other international contexts, highlighting the urgent need for standardisation in educational and professional frameworks.
Although the role of arts therapists is acknowledged in Slovenia, it remains unregulated and lacks oversight, complicating professional recognition. Standardised terminology and regulatory frameworks are essential for enhancing the profession's standing. Professional associations play a crucial role by facilitating educational initiatives, promoting ethical practices, and ensuring quality in therapeutic interventions. In comparison, countries with established registration systems benefit from legislative support and robust professional infrastructures, enabling effective internal certification processes.
The findings underscore the necessity for a regulatory framework in Slovenia, where arts therapists must advocate not only for greater media engagement and systemic integration to elevate the profession’s contribution to mental health and well-being but also set standards and professional registration system on the national level.

This report systematically elucidates the modern tragic healing system of "Crying Art" created by Zhu Luzi, which integrates philosophy and art. Originating from the limitations of theoretical healing, the emotional power of art, and the opportunity presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, Crying Art employs "crying" as its core method. Through the "Seven Cries of Crying Art," it guides practitioners into a state of "crying meditation" and facilitates "voice transformation", thereby purifying emotions such as "regret" and "fear," awakening the "crying instinct," and achieving the awakening of the "spiritual adolescence."
The theoretical foundation of Crying Art is robust, supported by modern life philosophy, the theory of spiritual adolescence, and a revised Aristotelian theory of tragedy. Structurally, it forms a complete journey from trauma release to spiritual transcendence, integrating healing, creation, and transcendental functions. The report clarifies the target audience for Crying Art, designs tiered practical steps, and identifies challenges such as the need for practical validation and reliance on instructor guidance. Drawing on a limited number of practical cases, it demonstrates the value of Crying Art in providing a path to self-salvation for individuals alienated by modern rationality and highlights its potential to contribute to the reconstruction of human civilization.

The Artdonnance Level 1 Program proposes an innovative approach to art therapy based on applied artistic semiotics. It combines creativity with scientific rigor to assess and support participants’ psychological and physiological well-being. Structured into six modules, the program integrates standardized assessment tools (PHQ-9, GAD-7, SCL-90, ATPS) and protocols for artistic and symbolic data collection. Each module follows a four-step methodology, ensuring progression, traceability, and longitudinal follow-up. Intercultural adaptations and international ethical standards ensure effective implementation across diverse cultural contexts.
The findings underscore the necessity for a regulatory framework in Slovenia, where arts therapists must advocate not only for greater media engagement and systemic integration to elevate the profession’s contribution to mental health and well-being but also set standards and professional registration system on the national level.

This keynote traces the evolution of Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) in India through the pioneering work of Tripura Kashyap since 1990. After completing her DMT training at the Hancock Center in Madison, Wisconsin, Tripura’s journey unfolded in three distinct phases. The first phase — ‘Arouse, Adapt, Apply’ — focused on generating interest in DMT, adapting its methods to the Indian socio-cultural landscape, and applying it across diverse populations, including people with hearing and visual impairments, older adults, and individuals living with schizophrenia and autism. During this period, she worked directly with these groups in various treatment and rehabilitation centres in Bangalore. The second phase — ‘Define, Deconstruct, Develop’ — involved redefining her pioneering work as Creative Movement Therapy and deconstructing DMT concepts to develop frameworks that could be shared through awareness-building workshops for therapists, special educators and group leaders across India. The third phase‘Reimagine, Rethink, Reinvent’ — marked a deeper exploration of therapeutic possibilities within Indian physical and spiritual traditions. This included studying the healing potential of Indian dance forms, collaborating with colleagues to examine the Chakra system as an embodied energy framework, and DMT practices inspired by Buddhist philosophy.

The E.Qi program is a multidisciplinary therapeutic model integrating horses, Qigong, and expressive arts within the seasonal frameworks of the Equinoxes and Solstices. This article analyzes thematic patterns from event documentation spanning 2024–2025 to articulate how seasonal energetics, somatic practices, relational experiences with horses, and creative processes converge to support emotional regulation, interoceptive awareness, and ecological attunement. Findings suggest that the program’s seasonal structure functions as a ritualized therapeutic arc that encourages participants to enact processes of release, renewal, expansion, and introspection in alignment with natural cycles. The E.Qi model offers a compelling contribution to embodied, nature-based, and trauma-informed therapeutic practices.

Youth violence, particularly bullying, is a pressing public health concern, with ethnic bullying emerging as a significant issue in schools. This presentation will share findings from a mixed-methods study examining the impact of a 10-week dance/movement therapy (DMT) intervention on interpersonal synchrony, empathy, peer relationships, and cultural self-efficacy among racially/ethnically diverse middle school students in the context of ethnic bullying. Participants will learn about a novel experimental method of using an accelerometer to measure group synchrony used for the first time in this study. Previous DMT research has demonstrated the potential to foster empathy and reduce bullying, as it allows students to express and understand emotions in a creative and engaging way. Results from studies indicate that DMT can effectively enhance empathy and promote prosocial behavior, offering a valuable strategy for addressing bullying and promoting inclusive school environments. The presentation will discuss implications for DMT and violence prevention programs and explore the potential for DMT to be integrated into school-based initiatives aimed at reducing ethnic bullying and promoting social-emotional learning. This research underscores the importance of using creative, embodied approaches to address the complex issue of ethnic bullying in schools.

Music engages distributed neural systems involved in perception, attention, movement, and social communication, making it a powerful tool for probing and supporting early brain development. Despite substantial advances in music-based interventions in adult populations, a critical gap remains in understanding how such approaches can be effectively applied to early childhood development. This work bridges cognitive neuroscience and clinical application to examine how music and sensory processing shape neurodevelopmental trajectories, with particular relevance for neurodevelopmental disorders. Converging evidence indicates that vulnerabilities in auditory perception and rhythmic timing are shared across multiple pediatric neurodevelopmental disorders, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), developmental coordination disorder (DCD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and developmental learning disorders such as dyslexia. These shared vulnerabilities suggest auditory and rhythmic timing as potential transdiagnostic mechanisms underlying atypical development. In this talk, I draw on behavioral, neurophysiological, and clinical research to explore the neurocognitive mechanisms through which musical experiences influence early brain maturation, sensory integration, and adaptive functioning. By integrating insights from neuroscience and music therapy, this work highlights music’s potential both as a scientific model for understanding atypical development and as a scalable, non-invasive tool for therapeutic innovation.

for renewal. This keynote explores how art-making—whether on public walls or digital feeds—shapes mental health, identity, and belonging in contemporary communities. Drawing from art therapy, psychology, and visual art practice, the talk examines how images, symbols, and
shared creative acts circulating in online spaces influence emotional regulation, social comparison, trauma expression, and collective meaning-making.
The keynote proposes an expanded role for art therapists as facilitators of ethical, inclusive, and healing co-creation across physical and virtual environments. By integrating community murals, group art therapy, and AI-supported creative tools, therapists can help communities process
conflict, re-story collective trauma, and imagine shared futures beyond fragmentation and polarization. Rather than viewing technology as a threat to human connection, this talk frames
AI-mediated platforms as potential “digital commons” for care when guided by therapeutic intention.
Ultimately, the keynote invites participants to re-envision art therapy as a bridge between human creativity and emerging technologies—supporting collective resilience, social repair, and the co-creation of tomorrow.

‘Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.’ (Aristotle)
As therapists, we become attuned barometers to the emotional landscapes of others. We also need to be cognisant of how our own internal worlds shape the therapeutic encounter. We cannot ignore what happens to us in sessions and how we can harness these experiences for the benefit of our clients. When we work in a therapeutic framework, we need to know ourselves, our triggers and our unmet needs to support clients’ growth and healing effectively. Self-awareness, reflective practice and the capacity to engage with both conscious and unconscious processes are central to ethical and relationally attuned art therapy practice.
In this presentation, Hephzibah Kaplan will reflect on the conscious and unconscious internal processes that therapists experience and their impact on the people we work with. The presentation will explore the use of self as both a clinical tool and a site of ongoing inquiry. Attention will be given to countertransference, embodied responses, and the role of creative reflection in deepening therapeutic presence. By moving from reflective practice into the therapeutic relationship, this presentation invites art therapists to consider how knowing and using the self can strengthen connection, containment, and meaning-making within the therapeutic space.

In the shadow of conflict, disaster, and forced migration, the wounds inflicted on the human psyche are often the most hidden and the most difficult to articulate. For millions of refugees and displaced persons worldwide, psychological support that transcends language and cultural barriers is not only essential for restoring individual functioning but also a cornerstone for rebuilding a life of dignity. This roundtable dialogue will convene international experts from the front lines of humanitarian work, clinical practice, and research to explore how arts therapy can serve as a powerful, non-verbal, and culturally sensitive medium, offering a unique pathway toward healing, resilience, and social integration for individuals and communities enduring profound trauma.
We will delve into how arts therapy can:
· Create a Container of Safety Amid Chaos: Explore how modalities like painting, music, and dance can be used to quickly establish a safe psychological and physical space for expression within temporary shelters or refugee camps.
· Repair Fractured Belonging and Identity: Analyze how collective art projects (e.g., community murals, drama workshops) can help shattered communities reconnect, co-narrate post-traumatic stories, and rediscover collective cultural roots and a sense of identity in a new land.
· Serve as a Bridge from Survival to Settlement: Examine how arts therapy can support the transition from a state of post-traumatic stress to a new life phase characterized by adaptability and creativity, fostering hope and agency for the future.
Core Discussion Themes:
1. Adaptive Practice and Cultural Humility: In crisis settings with extremely limited resources and diverse cultural backgrounds, how do arts therapists adapt their interventions to ensure they are both effective and respectful of local cultures?
2. Trauma-Informed Care and Ethical Boundaries: When working with highly vulnerable populations, how do we balance the activation of traumatic memories with the facilitation of healing? How can clear ethical frameworks be established to protect both participants and practitioners?
3. Systemic Integration and Evidence Building: How can arts therapy be effectively integrated into broader humanitarian aid and public health systems? What kind of research evidence is needed to demonstrate its long-term impact and advocate for greater resources and policy support?
4. Practitioner Resilience and Support: While providing healing for others, how can frontline workers in high-stress environments safeguard their own mental health and professional efficacy? What is the role of supervision and peer support networks?
Dialogue Format:
This roundtable will adopt a format of in-depth dialogue interwoven with case studies. Each expert will begin by sharing a powerful, brief case example or core insight from their real-world work, followed by a moderated, open discussion. We encourage all attendees not only to listen but to engage in reflection and questioning as part of a global community of care.
Why You Should Attend:
Whether you are a frontline practitioner, policymaker, researcher, or an advocate concerned with global mental health and humanitarian issues, this roundtable offers a invaluable opportunity to move beyond theory and engage directly with core challenges and solutions. Here, you will gain cutting-edge practical wisdom, connect with an international network of colleagues, and contribute your professional expertise to this urgent and vital mission.
Let us explore together: How can art become a gentle yet resilient light on the world's wounds, illuminating the path to reconstruction.

Equine and Expressive Arts Inspired Qigong is a holistic therapeutic approach that integrates traditional Qigong practices with the healing power of horses and creative expression. Qigong, a mind-body practice from China, helps cultivate the flow of qi, or life energy, through controlled movements, breathwork, and meditation. By combining this with equine therapy and expressive arts, this approach fosters emotional regulation, personal growth, and healing. Horses, known for their intuitive connection with humans, help facilitate emotional awareness and transformation. Meanwhile, expressive arts allow individuals to communicate and process emotions creatively. This integrative practice promotes balance and harmony in the emotional, physical, and spiritual realms, providing a powerful tool for personal transformation and well-being. Through the synergy of Qigong, horses, and creative expression, individuals can experience deep healing and reconnect with their inner strength and vitality.

The Expressive Therapies Continuum has been attracting attention from the international art therapy community since The Expressive Therapies Continuum: A Framework for Using Art in Therapy was first published by Dr. Lisa Hinz in 2009. This model seeks to utilize information processing inputs within a client’s nervous system and integrate them to help the individual create emotional homeostasis, achieving balance between internal needs and external demands. Presented by an art therapist who studied directly under the co-creators of the Expressive Therapies Continuum, Drs. Vija Lusebrink and Sandra (Kagin) Graves-Alcorn, this introduction to the framework will help art therapy educators understand basic concepts. Relevance to the art therapy profession will be highlighted and proposed competencies will be suggested to guide audience members who are interested in incorporating the Expressive Therapies Continuum into their work.

The way in which drawing facilitates memory function and who benefits most from using drawing as a memory aid will be explored in this presentation. A quantitative study revealed that children recalled their drawn images five times better than written words, nine weeks after initially memorizing them. Additionally, recent research indicates that individuals who struggle to remember written words benefit the most from drawing for memorisation and those with strong verbal memory retain their drawn images more effectively then written words in the long run. How memory drawing can be simultaneously applied for both educational and therapeutic purposes will be demonstrated through a review of a qualitative case study.

Traditional Chinese musical instruments not only carry a long cultural history but also serve as significant mediums for healing the body and mind with their unique tones and charm. Instruments such as the guqin, guzheng, erhu, xiao, and flute, through their melodious tunes and rich timbres, can touch the heart, bringing deep relaxation and tranquility.
The guqin, revered as the "king of musical instruments," is known for its ancient and elegant sound, often used for self-cultivation and mental refinement. When playing the guqin, the vibration of its strings aligns with the rhythm of human breathing, helping to regulate emotions, alleviate stress, and achieve a state of unity between body and mind. The guzheng, with its clear and melodious tones, is frequently used to express emotions. Its smooth melodies can guide listeners into a meditative state, releasing inner anxiety and unrest.
The deep tones of the erhu and the distant sounds of the xiao can evoke deep emotional resonance within people. The mournful sound of the erhu is suitable for expressing emotions, while the ethereal tones of the xiao can make one feel the tranquility and harmony of nature. The rhythms of these instruments not only soothe the soul but also regulate the body's physiological rhythms through sound wave vibrations, promoting blood circulation and enhancing immunity.
In the fast-paced modern life, listening to or playing traditional Chinese musical instruments can help people temporarily escape the hustle and bustle, returning to inner peace. Whether through musical meditation or personal performance, these instruments can become remedies for healing the body and mind, allowing one to find balance and harmony in the melodies.

I am excited to introduce you to a unique and profound therapeutic approach—Guided Imagery and Music, or GIM, developed by Helen Bonny. This method is a form of receptive music therapy, where the participant is guided through music and imagery in a deeply relaxed state. The carefully selected music helps to open pathways to the unconscious, facilitating emotional expression, self-discovery, and healing.
Through GIM, individuals are able to explore their inner world, connecting with emotions and memories, and finding insights in a safe, nonverbal way. This type of therapy can be incredibly transformative, as it allows the person to experience healing and personal growth through the power of music.
As part of this presentation, I will guide you through a short Music Journey—a live experience of how receptive music therapy works and how it can provide insights into your inner world. I invite you to sit back, relax, and let the music guide you.
